Right now, in a moment when our communities are being asked to show up for each other in real ways, board service can’t just be symbolic or performative, it has to be transformational and built with trust. That’s why I’m proud of this year’s Board Mentors of Color (BMOC) Mentors. This program is more than matching people with a mentor; it’s about passing down lived experiences, building community with mentees and mentors, discussing strategy, and sharing the unspoken lessons that come with navigating mainstream nonprofit boards as leaders of color and allies. BMOC is designed to build power and representation by intentionally connecting emerging and experienced board members of color and allies with leaders who understand the realities of navigating mainstream nonprofit boards.
